Kick the Capo: four note chords – part 5

So, we come to our final part of the four note chord series. We’ve covered most of it pretty extensively but there are a few more four note chords that I want to show you just to round of the series.

We’re going to look at three more chords, the half diminished, the major 6th and the minor 6th. It starts getting really interesting here (well, to me anyway!) because we start getting some cross over. I’ll show you what I mean.

Here are the notes of a D major 6th:

1   3     5   6

D   F#   A   B

However, if you put these same four notes in a different order then you get a Bm7:

1   3     5   7

B   D   F#   A

So, when you look over the shapes below for major 6ths, you’ll notice that they are exactly the same shapes as the minor 7 shapes we looked at in one of the earlier lessons. If you can start seeing these shapes as one then your musical imagination will really start to stretch.

This happens again when we look at minor 6ths:

1   3   5   6

D   F   A   B

These are the notes that make up a D minor 6th chord. But, these are the exact same notes that make up a B half diminished:

1   3   b5    7

B  D   F    A

Check out these shapes and get them into your playing. If you’ve worked your way through the ‘Jazz Building Blocks’ series then the half diminished shape is one you’ll definitely want to familiarise yourself with.
